Virginia Health Services and DaVita Kidney Care opened a Dialysis Den at James River Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Newport News. Patients started accepting on-site treatment July 14.
The DaVita Dialysis Den is an on-site dialysis center, exclusively available to James River’s long-term care and rehabilitation residents. James River provides 24-hour nursing services; occupational, physical and speech therapies; and on-site hemodialysis — reducing the discomfort, inconvenience and cost of frequent transportation for treatment.
The James River team is responsible for getting residents ready and taking them to and from the on-site treatment center. DaVita’s highly trained and dedicated care team members deliver on-site dialysis care to the residents, creating a more comfortable and convenient experience for many patients and their providers.
This is the second Dialysis Den collaboration between VHS and DaVita. A Den opened at Coliseum Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hampton in June 2023. In its first year, Coliseum’s Den completed 1,485 treatment sessions, said June Moore, Vice President of Admissions and Front-End Revenue Integrity.
Benefits of in-house dialysis
Having an on-site Dialysis Den is beneficial to residents because they — or their caretakers — no longer have to worry about transportation off-site in addition to receiving hours-long treatments.
By not having to leave the facility, residents are able to participate in their sessions and James River’s activities and events, giving them a fuller experience. The shortened transportation time also allows team members time to prepare residents for treatment in a more efficient time frame.
There are six chairs for James River residents to receive treatments in three days a week over three shifts. It can accommodate 18 residents a week, currently, with the ability to scale up as operations did at Coliseum.
This program is projected to reduce the total cost of care to payors like Medicare, as well as reduce hospital readmission events. VHS patients who are part of the DaVita SNF Dialysis network will require minimized discharge planning, as hospitals will have the ability to send patients in need of dialysis directly to the James River for care.
