Memory Care opens at Lancashire Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

KILMARNOCK, Va. (January 22, 2025) — Lancashire Nursing and Rehabilitation Center recently underwent a renovation to open the Rappahannock Memory Care Unit. The secured unit has private and semi-private rooms to comfortably accommodate 25 individuals with cognitive impairments such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Lancashire is the only nursing community in the Northern Neck area to offer Memory Care to Medicaid-qualified individuals.

The renovated Rappahannock Memory Care Unit at Lancashire has a large common area for dining, activities and socializing near the nurses’ station. There also is a secured courtyard area, along with a family room and a multi-sensory Snoezelen room with calming music and lighting.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of Rappahannock Memory Care unit is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 5, 2025. Media and invited members of the community are invited to see the unit and learn more about Lancashire’s Memory Care program. The team will be available for interviews.

Lancashire, which is one of seven nursing and rehabilitation centers owned and operated by Virginia Health Services (VHS), also offers skilled, long-term and respite care. VHS also has Memory Care available at Walter Reed Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Gloucester County.

“We now can offer a much-needed service to the Northern Neck community,” said VHS President and CEO Mark Klyczek. “Our mission to support individuals living their best life is evident in offering this care option, which supports both the residents and their families.”

The Lancashire team has undergone dementia-focused training, and Lancashire also is a member of the Stronger Memory Program, a grant-funded program under the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that works daily with 10 to 15 residents with cognitive impairments. Assistant Activity Director Tiffany Frazier will facilitate the program for the residents, which is monitored by the Stronger Memory Program.

“We want to make it a one-of-a-kind experience in this area and make it available to those in the area who need this service,” said Lancashire Administrator Amy Payne. “We’re transitioning from old-school memory care approaches to things that research has found really connects with the residents.”
