My mother-in-law, Elizabeth Jackson, recently received services at this facility on the skilled nursing unit following hospitalization. She was very pleased with the services that she received during her two-week stay. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. They were very prompt every time she rang for assistance. The therapy staff was top notch. They worked her hard within her physical abilities to increase her mobility and stamina. She thought that the meals were very good. The facility was very clean and well maintained. We would highly recommend this facility for anyone who needs physical rehabilitation following hospitalization.

Kind, caring and very professional therapists. Megan did my home physical therapy and it was great. She seemed to understand exactly what I needed. Thomas and Deb did most of my inpatient therapy and I can’t speak highly enough of either of them. Valerie did my home OT and was a pleasure to work with. I would recommend York Nursing and Rehabilitation Center highly to anyone. I spent 5 1/2 months as an inpatient there and went from flat on my back to walking with a walker, getting better every day. The fact is I miss all the therapists at York, and particular appreciation those who help me with my home physical therapy.

Since my retirement from the care giving field over a year ago, I have been a volunteer at York Convalescent & Rehab Center. Before that, I had worked in many different nursing homes in both VA and NY. When first coming here to serve, I was happy to discover that this is the most caring, friendly, and clean nursing home, rehab center, and Assisted Living facility I have ever had the pleasure to be in. I cannot praise the staff enough for their dedication to detail in every aspect to make this a safe, clean, and comfortable home for those who live here.

My mother has been a resident for over a year at YCC. The transition from rehab to skilled nursing is not an easy one for the resident or the family. But, the staff at YCC has showed us nothing but compassion and kindness during this transition. I have found the staff to be professional, patient centered, engaging, and caring. We visited yesterday in regards to possible placement for a family member. It was clean, staff was helpful and informative. The residents were lovely to speak with. I have been extremely impressed with the overall experience my wife and I have had. We came there for rehab after my wife fell and broke her left femur on January 11, 2024. The staff was very compassionate and caring. The physical and Occupational Therapists were excellent in working with my wife. Because of her Alzheimer's she struggled with doing what was needed for a physical recovery, but they never gave up on her. They truly love her and always encouraged her. At the end of her time in rehab, my wife was moved to long-term care. Last Wednesday, she fell and fractured her pelvis. She was returned to long-term care and immediately the Therapists have been here to help her work through the pain and support her for the therapy she needs to recover. I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate their professionalism and the way they treat my wife and me.

So we've had the opportunity to visit them three times. While these people aren't perfect, they want to do everything they can to help you. My wife was on the Colonial side and needed physical therapy to build her overall strength and confidence. We're extremely happy with their help as well as the lady that keeps everyone's room clean, there are daily afternoon entertainment scheduled for the residents that choose to participate if physically able. This is fun for those patients liking interacting with others. I really want to thank everyone there and certainly Lisa, if you want to know or fix something for your loved one she will make it better. She absolutely sees the issue through and gets a solution.

Carter Stulen | Administrator

Carter oversees the day-to-day operations as the Administrator of York Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and The Hamilton Assisted Living.

His background includes a bachelor’s degree in Health Administration from James Madison University. He completed his Administrator-in-Training (AIT) program while previously with Virginia Health Services. Carter brings his experience and enthusiasm for long-term care with the goal of enriching the lives of our residents. “It is truly rewarding to see how our work has a direct impact on the lives and wellbeing of others,” he says.

Carter regularly attends events with the Virginia Healthcare Association to stay up-to-date on trends in the long-term care industry. Outside of work, he enjoys an active lifestyle and playing games of pickleball with his wife and friends.

Mackenzie Mason | Assistant Administrator

Mackenzie started as an intern with Virginia Health Services in 2022 working with our senior living communities. She graduated from James Madison University in December 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in Health Service Administration with minors in Business and Gerontology. Mackenzie began full-time with VHS after graduation as Resident Navigator at Coliseum Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She completed the Administration-In-Training (AIT) program with Coliseum Administrator Dudley Haas as her preceptor. Mackenzie was offered the opportunity to come to York and The Hamilton as the Assistant Administrator and started in June 2024. She is currently working on obtaining her master’s degree in Health Administration.

Mackenzie enjoys spending her free time on the beach with a book in her hands. She is passionate about the older adult population and making a positive impact in their lives through serving them. In her new leadership position, she strives to follow “Leadership is an action not a position.”
