I had a leg amputation in May and arrived at The Newport the following week. As a 75-year-old male, losing the leg was a traumatic event and I arrived here with little muscle tone and and little energy. I was immediately entered into their therapy programs with daily sessions. The staff worked with me five days a week both before and after receiving an above-the-knee prosthetic. Progress was slow for me as I had to first get my muscles working as I have been retired for 20 years. Slowly I was given more and more complex tasks that eventually gave me the strength to begin walking again with two legs. I had to be taught how to rise from various heights and learn to manipulate my new leg. It was worked out great and I can now do just about anything I need to do to be able to be released. It was a long process but worthwhile. The therapy staff were great and I was given daily encouragement from even those I did not work with directly. It was a nurturing environment and I would heartily recommend the crew and their facilities.

I was admitted to the Newport Rehabilitation center with 2 broken legs 7 months ago. The therapy group has been my lifeline during this time and would get 6 stars from me. Therapists have gone above and beyond to work with me and assist me with everything! The Newport is clean and there are no bad smells. I would recommend the Newport.

When I admitted to this facility, I was very weak and Ellen with her workouts she got me back on my feet and walking again. With my walks outside I was able to get some much needed fresh air and exercise. Ellen is very patient with me and provided me with a lot of confidence to ease my fear of falling. Axle, Ellen's dog would come to visit and provided me with a lot of comfort. Without therapy I would be immobile and in bed all the time. In my opinion, there are special people that work in rehab. PS, they deserve a raise and I would give them more than 5 stars if I could.

Following hip surgery for a broken hip during the Christmas holidays my 92-year-old mother was transported from the hospital to the Newport for skilled nursing and therapy. In three months she was able to sit up, bear weight on her injured leg, and walk with a walker. She has just returned home with self-respect and independence with continued at-home therapy, again organized by The Newport staff. It takes a village to raise a child as well as to help the elderly. We took advantage of all services offered from the administrator, nurses, therapists, social worker, recreation services, dining and custodial staff. Visits by the therapy dogs were always welcomed. During difficult days of therapy, it was comforting to be greeted by the office/desk staff with a smile and "Nice to see you. How is your mom?" Then on the way out, "Have a nice evening." I highly recommend this team.

Initially, I did not see the purpose of the tasks that were asked of me. However, with time I realized the effect they were having on my muscles and my balance for the better. I was able to see the benefits of therapy in my everyday activities. The therapists are well informed and knowledgeable. I followed their instructions and put in the work and was able to gain mobility and independence back. They kept me motivated and encouraged me throughout my rehab journey. In the end I was able to use the tools and encouragement they had given me to regain the quality of my life back.

I am a patient at THE NEWPORT and feel that I have received very good care. The understaffed crew worked as fast as they could and were pretty efficient. They were short on some medical supplies but always seemed to come up with enough to take care of you until they could get more. I found the CNA's to be great, particularly Carrie, who would take care of your needs from changing undergarments to getting ice. They would check in each night to see if you were okay and needed anything. In the early morning they are there with clean towels and assistance if you need bathing. The food is served in a timely fashion at 9, 12, and 5. Menu and alternates are pretty good, but food needs more seasoning. This is probably due to different diets. Food is almost always warm and milk and tea cold. Fresh coffee is available at various times for guests and patients. Medication needs are administered with a good staff of LPN's and RN's, particularly Melissa, and delivered to patients in a timely manner. I find the therapy staff to be outstanding in that they have brought me to a place whereby I am progressing beyond my expectations. The equipment is adequate and staff is trained in various challenges to stimulate the patients mental and physical tolerance. I give this group a five star rating among the staff at the Newport. Overall, I am very satisfied with my care and feel that I am progressing well. I hope to be rehabilitated enough to return to my home, and with some help, take care of myself.

During my time in rehab the therapists were attentive, encouraging and helpful in all aspects of my rehabilitation. Axle, was a huge comfort throughout my healing process. Ellen was always there for me when I needed anything, especially toileting. They made it possible for me to be able to return to my home.

My husband, Don, just spent 66 days here. Overall the experience was great. He came there with complications after surgery. These complications made his Parkinson's Disease progress. He was basically bedridden. Today he came home and is able to transfer with help. He has made so much progress. The nursing staff is excellent, especially Melissa. The therapists are wonderful, especially Ellen and Elisabeth. They have been so patient and kind. Also gave me advice on how to best manage him at home with his Parkinson's.

Ellen is my Physical Therapist. She has helped me make progress during my long journey to get my strength and life back. Her dog Axle has provided me with much comfort and love during this trying time. He is so sweet and caring to all the patients and I truly believe he has helped my mental health. It is like he is cheering me on during my session. He is a wonderful asset to this facility. He should be awarded a special treat cookie and become a permanent therapy dog. Genny, my Occupational Therapist, has helped me gain the skills I need to get back home. I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the Physical & Occupational Therapy staff that have been so instrumental in my recovery. A month ago, I arrived unable to walk, climb stairs, or successfully accomplish other basic tasks of every day living. I am now walking, without assistance, able to climb stairs, utilize my right arm, and many more activities necessary for my self-sufficiency. The staff has been professional, pleasant and engaging, creating an atmosphere conducive for success. I am not an enthusiastic athlete & was surprised to be able to make progress on the various equipment. I credit the therapists for planning exercises that helped me to utilize therapy to its fullest advantage. Again, my sincere appreciation for all of your help!

They are so knowledgeable and patient, they speed your recovery process with the utmost care and teach you how to be safe in everything you do.

The comments made here are directed to the physical/occupational therapy staff. When I arrived here more than three months ago I could do very little physically but with the help and encouragement offered by the staff and in particular the therapists Elizabeth and Ellen, I have made progress beyond my expectations! The entire staff who worked with me were very supportive and encouraging, and their praise always (encouraged) me to work just a little harder. It is with great thanks that I give them the credit for my ability to return to an independent living. Girls—Thank you so very much.

The entire PT/OT staff at the rehab facility were exceptionally helpful in aiding my recovery from the surgery and trauma involved. They were very supportive of my efforts to recover. Ellen, Elizabeth and Erin were very patient with me, encouraging me with each step. The dogs were also SO good for my mental and emotional well-being.

I am writing this for my brother, who was a patient from September to December. He chose the Newport because he had heard what a wonderful Rehab department they had. You have exceeded his expectations. He was treated with compassion and kindness from the entire staff, from housekeeping to Administrator. The nursing staff is excellent, the physical therapy department is the best. I will not name names for fear of leaving someone out because you are all tops. Billy had set goals for himself and you all were able to help him reach them. He truly would have spent the entire day in the gym if you could have allowed it. The staff was always ready to help in any way they could. Making sure that as picky as he is he got the food he wanted. I'm sure he kept the kitchen staff on their toes. Housekeeping was efficient and caring. Thank you. The PA is as good as any Doctor. We felt confident under your care. I will change my mind and name Ellen and Elizabeth in rehab for their great care and concern for Billy's welfare and recovery. Steve was always asking if we needed anything and making sure we were happy. We are very glad to give The Newport 5 stars and would give more if possible. A big THANK YOU TO EVERYONE.

My father and mother have been to The Newport previously for rehabilitation services. My family was very pleased with the services during previous stays. This recent stay required more nursing services than rehabilitation, but the entire team assisted. We found ourselves in an end-of-life situation and would give more than 5 stars if that was an option. Everyone exceeded our expectations and was very caring from the Administrator to housekeeping and dining services. In our situation, the nurses and CNAs responsible for his care took extra special care. Thank you to all of the staff.

Ellen and Elizabeth were super helpful in helping me to get back on my feet. Their encouragement was consistent with my recovery and was just what I needed. I could not have asked for better therapists! They made therapy fun by mixing up their methods, which made it an enjoyable event every day and something to look forward to; never boring! Elizabeth had me do some practical things so that when I go home, I will have the confidence I need to be on my own again. Ellen's dog Axel, was always a welcome addition to the therapy and was always glad to greet you with his tail wagging and warm demeanor. Thank you for everything you have done for me!

Shout out especially to the therapy department, both PT and OT, for their excellent rehab program tailored to each individual's needs and goals. They involved me in planning for my needs/hopes besides knee rehab as my core and lower extremities were weak. They started me on a regimen to improve both my knee (reason for admission) and core, etc, so I am better noq after 3 and a half weeks here than I was 4 months ago. Always encouraging but firm in their "stick 2 it" attitude, this is the best group I have worked with. The nursing staff is caring, the aides quickly learned my likes and preferred schedule, and I always felt cared for. I would highly recommend The Newport Rehab, especially following surgery. My only suggestion would be more salad offerings!

Stephen Berczek

Stephen Berczek | Administrator

Stephen supervises and coordinates the operations departments at The Newport Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and The Huntington Assisted Living, and ensures the facility is complying with state and federal regulatory requirements. He recently graduated from Marymount University, earning a BS Health Sciences while being a part of the baseball program. Stephen became a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator in January 2021. In his spare time, he enjoys snowboarding, traveling, and restoring/riding motorcycles. Giving back to those who have built the community that we live in is what inspires him. Seeing residents comfortable and living their best life motivates Stephen to do his best. He strives to ensure his Team is successful.

Melissa Prince-Crouch, RN | Director of Nursing

Melissa Prince-Crouch, RN, CWS is the Director of Nursing for The Newport. She has been with Virginia Health Services since 2011 when she was a LPN. She was promoted to a charge nurse after becoming an RN in 2015, then transitioned to Assistant Director of Nursing/MDS before adding infection prevention to her title. She is a certified wound care specialist and became DON of The Newport in 2025.

The Newport has a high skilled care population of residents who are eager to start rehabilitation therapy so they can return to their home. Melissa says giving residents encouragement, an extra push and extra love to help them through rehabilitation and seeing them push themselves and put in the hard work to be successful and able to go back home when they didn’t think they would is very rewarding. 

“Our residents are like a box of chocolates,” she says, echoing “Forrest Gump.” “You never know what you’re going to get.”
