PAM & JIM'S STORY

Jim and Pam are retired and nearing 80. Jim, a Navy veteran, knows it’s too dangerous to perform maintenance on their house, such as mowing the large lawn and climbing a ladder to change batteries of the smoke detectors hidden near the top of their cathedral ceilings. His balance isn’t what it used to be. Pam still volunteers at church, but her eye sight is deteriorating and she shouldn’t drive at night. Their daughter, Melissa, lives about 30 minutes away and frequently worries about their safety.

After discussing the pros and cons of moving to a senior living community, Melissa helps Jim and Pam settle in at The Arbors Independent Living in Newport News. While it’s still a 30-minute drive for Melissa to visit, she now has peace of mind her parents are safe. Jim no longer has to climb a ladder to change any batteries, and Pam can participate in church activities by scheduling transportation at the concierge desk. They have turned housekeeping over to The Arbors staff — no more getting on their knees to clean the bathrooms! — and now have more time to enjoy life.

They both enjoy evenings in the dining room, sharing a cocktail with new friends they met during Bingo their first week after moving in, before settling into the daily specials. They end the evening splitting the dessert du jour.

Pam still hosts weekly suppers with Melissa, and when the garbage disposal backs up, all Jim has to do is make a quick call for maintenance.

Rest comes easily – regularly – to them all now that Pam and Jim call The Arbors home.

Amanda Lehto, Director

Amanda Lehto leads operations at The Arbors Independent Living. She was a licensed nurse for 24 years and spent several years as an assisted living administrator.

Before joining the team at The Arbors, she spent 13 years in management roles and successfully managed senior living communities for all levels of care, including independent and assisted living, and memory care. Amanda is a Certified Resident Assessment Coordinator, and Certified Dementia Practitioner, and previously served as a member of the Health Care Advisory Committee for the Virginia Assisted Living Association (VALA). She is a volunteer with Three Rivers Health District Medical Reserve Corp.

She is the proud wife of a combat veteran, the adoring mother to two wonderful and successful daughters and the “Nana” to two beautiful grandchildren. Her other children are four-legged and furry — two German Shepherds and one Husky. Amanda also enjoys spending free time outdoors gardening.

Her favorite quote is, “Those who stand for nothing, fall for anything” which is attributed to Alexander Hamilton. It highlights the importance of making decisions based on your values and it was her mother’s favorite, which makes its meaning resonate.

Her journey to senior care began in adolescence, when she watched her mother struggle with a serious medical condition. It motivated Amanda to enter the nursing profession. She quickly fell in love with the senior population, and that fuels her passion to ensure every senior gets the respect, care and support system they deserve to live their best life.
