VHS HOSPICE CARE

The VHS Hospice team specializes in creating an individualized plan to care for you with a focus on your quality of life and comfort.

VHS Hospice can assist caregivers and improve an individual’s quality of life. Our team will work with you, your loved ones and your physician to determine eligibility for Hospice admission.

Our staff is specially trained in providing holistic, compassionate palliative care, including addressing mental, physical, or spiritual needs. This includes nursing care and physician oversight as well as counseling services you and your loved ones.

Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most commercial insurers. It is for those whose condition is terminal and who have received a prognosis of six months or less. It is an option for individuals who do not wish to receive aggressive, curative treatments and lengthy hospital stays.

Hospice team members will provide care wherever you reside. In addition, the hospice benefit typically provides for a respite stay, which we can readily arrange at a VHS community.

Interested in volunteering?

Our volunteers are the heart of what we do. Join us in making a difference in the lives of others. VHS Hospice is looking for compassionate and thoughtful volunteers to assist those in our care, their caregivers and our team members. You’ll provide emotional support and companionship. Some responsibilities include assisting our clients with tasks such as gardening, lawn maintenance and pet care. Your duties may include providing relief to caregivers or assisting our team in the office with a variety of tasks. We provide all the necessary training.

GRIEF COUNSELORS

The VHS Hospice counseling team is available to those who are seriously ill, and their caregivers and family. We understand the grief process. Our care continues for a year after a loved one passes, providing bereavement counseling to those in mourning. Our counseling services can include one-on-one meetings, support groups and follow-up calls.

I recently learned a lot working with VHS Hospice. I sort of had some positive thought and expectation of what Hospice does; but I had no idea what a personal mission this would be. We pulled my mother into care with VHS Hospice last November and I left my home across country to see my mom and see what her routine was and how hospice would help. Admittedly, I was a basket case. My first day with my mom was super traumatic and I did not understand what I was seeing. My first night I call Pat, the nurse assigned to my mom. After telling her what I was witnessing she explained to me what was going on and put my mind at ease. For the time I was there, I was by my mom's side as much as I could be. The social worker, Hannah, was my rock. Upon her visit we sat down together and I just spewed out everything I had seen and experienced. She listed. When I was done, she asked me an incredibly simple but powerful question, "Heather, how are you?" Through the entire process, I had never thought about me and how "I" was. I stopped everything and thought hard before answering. It was a valuable lesson for me and I really felt like, Hannah did care. She cared about me and my mom. I cannot express how brilliant she is at her job and as a human being, she is pretty darn remarkable. Also, on the team was the aide, Lynn. Understand, my mother was not the kindest person in the end and could be very hostile and violent. Lynn remained calm and kind. When I asked to help, she let me work alongside her and help my mother in her most vulnerable moments. And, really, reflecting back on that really helped me to have a connection with my mom and empathize with all that she had become. And then there was Pastor Richard, he came by when I was visiting, and regardless of my religious beliefs and/or study, he brought so much calmness to me and my mother in just talking to us, quoting beautiful passages from the bible and sang some beautiful songs. I could see my moms breath and face relax. I learned from him that I didn't always need to talk my mom through this, but would snuggle her, hold her hand in silence and sometimes with a little tuned quietly sung or hummed. After I had to come back home, both Pastor Richard and Hannah kept on contact with me. They would text and call me and give me updates. Oh, man, that was so special. They are both such beautiful people. Hannah was the one who called me when my mom left us. I would not have wanted it any other way. She went above and beyond in helping me during and after. She is a miracle. VHS Hospice is blessed to have her working for them. Thank you all! You brought light into my mom and my life when we were surrounded by darkness.

Each of them went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed as well as emotional support. It was clear that they really care about what they do; it's not just a job. VHS Hospice gave my mother excellent care at the last stage of her life, which also brought comfort and reassurance to us, her family. I live overseas, and my initial communication with VHS Hospice was by e-mail and phone. Individual members of the VHS Hospice team reached out to introduce themselves and then kept me informed of my mother’s condition as it worsened. Friends and relatives who visited Mom commented on the high quality of the care she was receiving through VHS Hospice. When I arrived at my mother's home immediately after her death, I was met with a VHS Hospice representative, who showed sensitivity and compassion in dealing with my bereavement. A few days after Mom’s death, I was contacted by the team social worker, who arranged a meeting with my sister and me to offer her condolences and to let us know that bereavement counselling was available to us for 12 months after our mother’s death. The chaplain on Mom’s team similarly reached out to us. I had not been previously aware of VHS Hospice but I am so glad that the service exists and that it has such excellent people on its staff.

There are not enough words to express the gratitude we have for the wonderful nurses that helped our family during the most difficult time. My mother-in-law was in hospice with VHS and they did everything in there power to provide support and care for not only my mother-in-law but for our entire family. When a loved one needs hospice care, you're never prepared. Nevertheless, when the time comes, you want to make sure that your loved one is cared for by the best organization. As the time came for us to decide, we had several options. Because we had the BEST social worker Amy, we knew VHS Hospice was the right choice. At the end of her life, she was our mother's advocate, and that is what you need. The process of getting set up was straightforward, explaining everything needed for this next phase. The nurses, support staff and everyone we dealt with were very professional and caring. It was not an easy journey for our loved ones, but every phone call to get assistance was met with compassion, understanding, and, most importantly, answers. Pat was also a blessing to work with. Her phone was answered on the weekends, at night, and in the morning. She showed our mom such love and compassion. She chose to come and be with us at the end, which gave Mom and all of us such comfort. Even during a very difficult time, she made it heartwarming. We are forever grateful to all who helped us, especially Amy and Pat. If you want to give your loved one the gift of dignity at the end of life, VHS Hospice is who you need to choose.
